  • The MPPT VE.Can SmartSolar charger automatically detects and charges 12, 24, or 48V battery banks with current ranging from 70 to 100A. It can be programmed to charge different battery chemistries and remotely controlled and configured over Bluetooth via the VictronConnect App. The charger also has CAN bus ports for communication with additional VE.Can SmartSolar chargers and is equipped with a VE.Direct port. An optional plug-in LCD display provides live-data, set-up, and management from the front of the device.

When networked together, each VE.Can SmartSolar charge controller will synchronize their charge stages. They can also send their performance data, via a single cable, to a GlobalLink 520, Cerbo GX, or other Victron GX monitoring device.

    Features include:

    • Built-in Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) makes continuous adjustments to optimize solar harvest in low light and less-than-ideal weater conditions.
    • Fully programmable charge settings for different battery chemistries, including lithium.
    • Outstanding efficiency, exceeding 98%.
    • Set-up, manage and view valuable information at a glance, such as battery voltage and current, PV voltage and current, and historical data using the VictronConnect App.
    • Over temperature protection and power derating when the temperature is high, as well as PV short circuit and PV reverse polarity/PV reverse current protection
    • Recovery of a fully discharged battery.

  • The name of each Victron solar charger reflects the maximum PV voltage and the maximum battery charge current. For example, the Smart Solar MPPT 150/70 TR has a maximum PV voltage of 150V and can charge the battery with a maximum of 70A.

Victron solar charge controllers come with a few different PV terminal options to choose from to best fit existing connectors.

    • TR - one positive and one negative screw terminal
    • MC4 - 2 pairs of MC4 connectors (3 pairs of MC4 connectors on the 150/85, 150/100, 250/85, and 250/100 models).

  • Any given solar panel has its own performance curve and a peak performance number based on temperature and how much sun is reaching them. Finding and staying near that peak performance number dramatically improves PV output. Victron MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) technology makes constant adjustments based on input current to 'find' the most power. This can result in a 30% efficiency gain compared to a PWM solar charge controller and a 10% gain compared to slower MPPT solar charge controllers.

Victron MPPTs also allow you to bring in a higher voltage from the solar array. This means we can start charging and putting power into the batteries even when conditions are not ideal, such as low light in the morning and evening. This significantly expands the time window to charge the batteries, compared to a PWM solar charger.

    Going off-grid with Victron Energy

Homeowner and solar installer Eric Enquist lives with his family in Boulder, MT. Last summer, he disconnected his house from the grid to install an off-grid system powered by solar, Pylontech batteries, and Victron Energy components. We sat down to ask him about his experience and to share advice with homeowners designing their own system.
